At the 1993 meetings of the AEA, Kaushik Basu posed the traveller's dilemma to highlight "the paradox of rationality in game theory". The traveller's dilemma is a single-shot extension of the prisoner's dilemma in which the unique Nash equilibrium seems an implausible outcome. If we reject the equilibrium strategy, how then should we play the game?

In an attempt to determine how game theorists would play this game, we are staging a competition with two prizes to a maximum value of $2000 and $1000 respectively. Participation will be limited to expert game theorists, as defined by membership of the Game Theory Society. Accordingly, you are invited to participate.

Full details of the game and the competition can be found at

together with an online entry form. This site is protected to enforce the limit on participation. The user name is GTS and the password dilemma. Entries close on 15 July. Participants will be notified of the results by the end of July.
